Terminology

UNIT
Unit is a general term that represents the items and containers tracked in the system.

HANDLE
Handles represents the ID number for items, containers, areas, teams, etc. It is often represented by a barcode that can easily be scanned. Serialized items and containers will be represented by a unique Handle ID.

Items tracked by quantity will inherit the Handle ID from the item master and therefore multiple records can exist with the same Handle.

Areas are defined by a unique Handle ID.

Anything labeled in the system with ID or Code is a Handle.

ITEM MASTER
Can also be referred to as a part number, SKU, item code, etc. It represents the primary ID representing the actual units tracked in the system. It is typically the number that someone would use to order it from a vendor or sell to a customer. Item units tracked by quantity will reuse the item master number as the handle of the unit. Serialized item units have separate unique handle IDs, however, will still be associated to the Item Master.

FACILITY
A facility is an internal location representing a warehouse, stockroom, or plant location. It typically has a physical address. Other terms that are used with a Facility would be a Site, Location, or Warehouse. In the PanatrackerST setup, a Facility will always be associated with a Team. Typically, this is set up as a one-to-one relationship; however, there can be multiple facilities associated to a single Team.

TEAM
A team is defined as the custodian or owner of units tracked in the system. Users are assigned to teams to be able to complete transactions on behalf of the team and/or access the units and unit details under the custody of the team. There are multiple team types.
INTERNAL TEAM. Are those teams associated directly as part of the organization.
EXTERNAL TEAM. Are teams that represent customers, vendors, and carriers
Custody and Ownership of the units tracked in the system are associated to a Team.
Location of the units is tracked based on the facility and addresses setup under the team.

CUSTODY
The current team or user that is responsible and in possession of units tracked in the system. Custodians can be internal teams, users, or carriers.

OWNERSHIP
The team that owns the units being tracked in the system. Ownership can be internal teams or customer teams. Ownership can also be set up to be assigned to the organization versus a specific team. Different rules apply for units owned by internal teams or the organization versus customer-ownership. Ownership can be transferred using the Transfer Ownership transaction or (for internal ownership) based on rule setup. It is recommended to set internally owned quantity-tracked items as owned by the organization.

PROJECT
Project is a generic term in the PanatrackerST system that represents either a project, job, or contract. Customers and addresses (customer and internal) can be associated to a project.

RESERVATION
Reservations are part of the Check Out process. When the unit to check out is added to the check-out list, it is updated to a status of reserved. Units selected as part of the check-out can remain reserved under a Reservation ID for later check out or checked out immediately.

SCAN FIRST
A feature that is part of the mobile application that supports scanning a handle (item, container, area) in the user’s current custody to return information about the unit and access shortcuts to transactions that can be completed for that unit.
